The Playbook
Chapter 3:
The Special Teams
Building the roster that supports the mission. From VA navigation to community 'battle buddies,' these are the plays for organizing your backup so you don't have to carry the weight alone.

01 . The Military Bridge (VA & Benefits)
As a veteran family, the VA system is one of your most powerful but complex tools. Don't wait for them to find you. Reach out to a Caregiver Support Coordinator immediately to learn about stipends, respite care, and home modification grants. This isn't a handout; it’s a resource earned through service.
02. The Support Huddle (Logistics)
When people ask 'How can I help?', give them a specific play to run. Use tools like Meal Train or CaringBridge to manage the food, the house, and the updates. It reserves your energy for Kacey and keeps the 'outside world' organized without you having to send 50 individual texts a day.

03. Finding Your Battle Buddies
Isolation is the enemy. Whether it’s through the Elizabeth Dole Foundation or specialized GBM support circles, find the people who speak your language. You need a Huddle that understands the overlap of military life and a medical crisis—people who don't need an explanation for why today is hard.
04. The Financial Knockout (Keep Punching)
When insurance says "no," we keep punching. This is the resource for the integrative care and quality-of-life tools that insurance often ignores.
Patient Assistance Grants: You can request funding for the critical items insurance won't cover—like home modifications, specialized supplements, or out-of-pocket co-pays. Keep Punching provides grants up to $1,500 per patient to help bridge the financial gap.
Professional Patient Navigators: Access FREE one-on-one support to help you navigate the medical maze. Keep Punching navigators help you coordinate care and manage the emotional and logistical hurdles of a new brain cancer diagnosis.
"Punching Pals" Community: Don’t fight in a vacuum. Use their Caregiver Support program to connect with other "Punching Pals" who understand the specific grit required for this battle.
05. The Marine Corps Safety Net (Semper Fi & America’s Fund)
Founded by military spouses who saw the need for bedside support, Semper Fi & America's Fund provides immediate financial assistance and lifetime support for combat wounded, critically ill, and catastrophically injured service members from all branches, with a special legacy of serving the Marine Corps.
What they provide:
Urgent Financial Grants: They offer needs-based financial assistance for pressing expenses during long hospitalizations, such as travel, lodging, childcare, and out-of-pocket medical costs.
Lifetime Support: Their case managers work one-on-one with families to provide tailored support for as long as it is legitimately needed.
Integrative Wellness: Programs focused on long-term health, including neurofitness for cognitive function and PTSD/TBI support.
The "Unfiltered" Why: They are known for their incredibly fast turnaround—often delivering emergency assistance within 24-48 hours of an approved request.
Actionable Step: Use the Semper Fi & America's Fund Donation portal to support other families, or visit the Semper Fi & America's Fund Home page to connect with a case manager if you are the one in need.
